Today, we stand at the cusp of another such transformation, driven by Generative AI (GenAI).

While the buzz is palpable, akin to the early days of the internet, it’s crucial to understand GenAI not just as a novel tool, but as the latest, and potentially most profound, informational GPT. Here’s what I mean: General Purpose Technologies (GPTs) are the tectonic plates of economic and societal change. They don’t just improve upon existing processes; they fundamentally reshape what’s possible, providing a core capability that inventive minds can then direct toward myriad unforeseen applications. Think of the printing press, the steam engine, the computer – each unleashed waves of innovation far beyond their initial conception.
What Makes a Technology "General Purpose"?
GPTs work by providing or dramatically enhancing a foundational capability. We’ve seen these dramatic enhancements before. The steam engine multiplied physical force, decoupling production from the limitations of muscle, water, or wind.
Informational GPTs, like language itself, tackles the transmission, preservation, and processing of information.
While writing broke the chains of immediate physical proximity for knowledge sharing; the printing press and later the internet greatly increased the speed, breadth, and affordability of that dissemination. Then, the computer introduced automated information processing – retrieving, manipulating, calculating.
Today, GenAI builds directly on this lineage (particularly the computer), but introduces a novel form of information processing: minimally constrained prediction, or something akin to artificial contemplation. It doesn't just execute commands; it generates novel content, synthesizes information, and even mimics reasoning.
This distinction is key.

What makes GenAI particularly potent as a GPT?
To start, its primary interface is language, the bedrock of human coordination and knowledge. The range of tasks addressable through this language is vast.
Second, GenAI harnesses a process remarkably similar to what cognitive scientists believe is a core function of the brain: prediction. By learning patterns from vast datasets, GenAI excels at predicting the next step, whether that's a word in a sentence, a line of code, or a potential medical diagnosis.
This predictive power allows us to effectively outsource cognitive effort on an unprecedented scale. Human cognition is metabolically expensive; our brains consume a significant portion of our energy. Throughout history, increasing collective "brain power," often through population density and communication tools, has fueled innovation. GenAI offers a step-change, providing scalable, tireless cognitive capacity that can augment our own.
Early Impacts and Emerging Value
We are already witnessing this new GPT being directed towards disparate applications across countless sectors. From achieving state-of-the-art performance in tasks like Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to acting as job application assistants, medical diagnostic aids, elite software engineering partners, and even legal arbitrators, the breadth is staggering.
Experimental evidence consistently points towards significant productivity enhancements across sectors, and large-scale surveys corroborate this: GenAI is already assisting in a noticeable fraction of work hours, yielding tangible time savings. Beyond augmenting existing tasks, entirely new business models and AI-native companies are being built, signalling substantial opportunities for value creation.
Navigating the Adoption Curve
Despite this potential, we remain in the nascent stages of adoption. Like many GPTs before it – encountering initial skepticism and uncertainty as to their best use – GenAI faces its own adoption hurdles. A recent Gallup survey found only 15% of employees reporting a clear organizational strategy for AI integration. This isn't necessarily surprising: adapting to new technologies takes time.
However, unlike earlier industrial GPTs where physical infrastructure was often the bottleneck, the primary limiting factor for GenAI appears to be human adaptation and experimentation. The core technology, fueled by scaling laws, continues to improve rapidly.
The challenge lies in understanding what the technology can truly do, how to harness it effectively and ethically, and how to redesign processes and business models to leverage its strengths.
The internet accelerated innovation by democratizing information access; GenAI promises to accelerate not only access but also information processing – ideation, integration, and implementation.
Opportunity and Responsibility
No powerful technology comes without potential downsides. The steam engine brought industrialization but also pollution and wrenching social change. Smartphones and social media connected the world but also challenges such as misinformation and polarization. Similarly, GenAI presents potential negative externalities we must proactively manage: algorithmic bias, misuse, and workforce displacement to name a few.
Therefore, the path forward requires more than just technical implementation. Organizations need clear strategies, thoughtful experimentation, and a commitment to responsible use. Maximizing the net benefits demands a conscious effort to mitigate the risks while harnessing the immense potential for productivity, innovation, and ultimately, new forms of value creation. The trajectory isn't preordained; it depends on the choices we make now.
